How to update your website

The WordPress Dashboard interfaceThe WordPress Dashboard is where you add and amend Pages, Posts and Testimonials, change your contact details, and access your website statistics.

To access the WP Dashboard simply open a browser window and enter your website address followed by /wp-admin (eg I would type in www.cphtwebsites.co.uk/wp-admin). Enter your Username and Password and click Log in.

The updates below are applied by clicking on the options which appear in the left-hand Dashboard bar. Once applied, you can view the changes on your website by clicking on your Website name which appears at the top left of the Dashboard bar. To return to the Dashboard simply hover top left again and select Dashboard.

Creating Pages

Click on + New/Page or Pages/Add New. First give a title to your page. Next enter text in the Visual tab box below. Click on Add Media to add an image. When finished click Publish.

NB: If you copy in text from a different program (Word etc) make sure you right-click and paste as “Plain Text”. This way you won’t copy in fonts, colours and coding from the external program.

Editing text in Pages

Click on Pages/All Pages. Select the page to edit by clicking on page link. Apply changes. Click Update. From the Dashboard you can also edit pages by selecting Visit site, navigating to the page and then clicking Edit page.

Adding images to Pages

Click on Pages/All Pages. Select the page to edit by clicking on the page name. Once in Edit page mode, place the cursor where you wish the image to appear. Click on the Add Media button above. Click on the Upload Files link and then Select Files. Select your image from your computer and click Open. Once imported click Insert into Page. Click once on the image to resize it, and open the small image menu bar, which has options for left/right text wrapping. Click Update.

Deleting Pages

Click on Pages/All Pages. Mouse-hover over the page to delete and click Bin.

Adding Pages to the Top Menu

Click on Appearance/Menus. All pages created will appear in the left tab under Pages/Most recent. Tick the newly created page and click Add to Menu. The page will now appear in the right tab Menu Structure. Drag and drop where you wish the page to appear. If you drag a tab slightly to the right you can create sub-menus. If you click on the small arrow to open a tab you can assign a particular Navigation label to that page (eg your homepage’s title is “Welcome to my Hypnotherapy website” but the link can appear as “Homepage” in the Top menu) or Remove that page link from the menu. Click Save Menu.

Creating Posts

Posts are the articles which make up your Blog. To create a Post click on + New/Post or Posts/Add New. Give the Post a title and enter text in the Visual tab box below (like creating a page). Click on Add Media to add an image. When finished press Publish. The new Post will automatically appear on your My Blog page.

Editing Posts

Click on Posts/All Posts. Select the post to edit by clicking on the post name. Apply changes same as for a Page. Click Update.

Deleting Posts

Click on Posts/All Posts. Mouse-hover over the post to delete and click Bin.

Adding Testimonials

Click on + New/Testimonial or Testimonials/Add New. Give the testimonial a title (Enter Highlight Here) and enter text in the Visual tab box below (like creating a page). Scroll down to Testimonial Options and tick the Attach to Rotator box. Underneath, give the Testimonial 5 stars. Add the testimonial author if you wish in Author Information. You can also define in which order the testimonials will appear in the Order box – testimonials appear smallest Order number first. Press Publish. The new Testimonial will automatically appear on your Testimonial page and Homepage Rotator.

Editing Testimonials

Click on Testimonials/All Testimonials. Select the testimonial to edit by clicking on testimonial link. Apply changes same as for a Page. Click Update.

Deleting Testimonials

Click on Testimonials/All Testimonials. Mouse-hover over the testimonial to delete and click Bin.

Changing your Relaxation MP3 page password

Go to the Relaxation MP3 page on your website and click Edit Page. In the Publish box top right click Visibility – Edit. Amend the password as desired and click OK, then Update.

Updating your Contact Widget

Click on Appearance/Widgets. Open the first Text widget which appears in the Right Sidebar. Amend as desired and click Save.

Updating your Google SEO Description on the Homepage

Go to the Homepage and click Edit Page. Scroll below the content box to the AIOSEO Settings box. Update the Meta Description field. Click Update.

How much traffic is your site getting ?

To view your website’s statistics click on Jetpack / Statistics at the top left of the Dashboard menu.

Who has signed up to your Blog ?

To find out your email Blog followers click on Jetpack / Subscribers at the top left of the Dashboard menu.
